In 1989, the National Avian Research Center (NARC), the world’s first dedicated houbara research and breeding facility, opened in Abu Dhabi. Since the start of the programme, an impressive 795,569 houbara have been bred and released across 18 countries within the species’ natural range (as of 2023).
One of NARC’s primary objectives is to preserve the genetic purity of the houbara. By ensuring that captive-bred birds retain the same genetic traits as their wild counterparts, the programme maximises their chances of survival. Today, the center’s breeding techniques have become the global reference standard for houbara conservation.
Researchers study the birds’ physiological and behavioural characteristics, both in the wild and in captivity, enabling scientists to recreate the most suitable artificial conditions to breed the species at scale. After release, the houbara are closely monitored in their natural habitats, and the data collected is vital not only to IFHC but also to local organisations across the birds’ range, helping to conserve biodiversity and protect fragile ecosystems.
This tour offers a truly unique, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to witness ground-breaking science in action and to gain a deeper understanding of the pivotal role Abu Dhabi plays in global conservation efforts.
